About Me

My photo
I've been married to my husband, Michael, for almost 25 years. I'm a mom to a biological son and an adopted son from Colombia, and I'm also a spiritual mom to my adopted son's older brother, who I claim as a son in my heart. I'm bilingual and love to work with and relate to Spanish-speaking children and families. I've been a teacher to students from all sorts of backgrounds and cultures for the last 20+ years. I'm also an author and a certified Biblical counselor. I'm in a new empty nest season in a new location far from where I raised my boys, so I'm definitely in a stage of rediscovering myself, my interests, and my purpose.

Christmas Break 2023

I finally got to go on "vacation" in Texas for the first time since I moved away. That's what I asked for from Juan for Christmas, so we split the ticket cost, half as a gift to me, and the other half would be my gift to my parents by being able to spend the holidays with them rather than spending money on a tangible gift. I'd say this "gift" to collect moments, not things, stretched far more and meant more to me than any physical gift I could have been given. It definitely filled my heart to the brim.

So here's a recap and a few pics of my break, which actually started on....

Wednesday, December 20--After a full morning Christmas party with the kids, they left on a field trip while I went to have coffee with Hannah, my closest friend here. Such a treasured way to end an overstimulating day. :)

New Song Christmas party

A few gifts from New Song staff and students

Thursday, December 21--Wrapped all the stocking stuffers for my boys and successfully packed my bags to spend Christmas Eve with both of them

Friday, December 22--Met up for coffee with a sweet friend/old coworker, Olivia, back in town for Christmas after moving away with her new husband over the summer

Late game night with Mike to soak up time together before I leave for 8 days.

Saturday, December 23--Brunch at home with Mike, then watched Heartland and played games. Celebrated our own Christmas Eve at home together. Fish dinner and peanut butter pie

Sunday, December 24--Christmas Eve brunch together, Finished packing, Went to church, Ran coffee booth, Lunch at home, Made banana bread/coffee cake for Mike's Christmas morning, Left for airport. Me: Dropped at airport at 3:00 (for 5:50 flight) so Mike could make it back to eat out for Christmas Eve with his family, go to Christmas Eve service, and hang out playing games with his mom all evening "till Santa comes". Hooray! No issues at security, no gifts had to be unwrapped. :)

7:15--Flight arrived in Dallas. David picked me up. Headed to Juan's apartment to celebrate Christmas Eve.

Christmas Eve tradition: Papa John's pizza

Love those boys!

A few crafts I've been working on

A 3-D card from Juan

Spent Christmas Eve with Juan and David, eating pizza, drinking some yummy drinks, and letting them open their stockings of little goodies I brought for them. We had a really fun time just hanging out, talking, and playing Uno. I cherished every moment of this unique Christmas with them. I finally went to bed around 1:00 a.m., but they both stayed up watching TV for probably another two hours after that.

Monday, December 25th--We all got up on the later side, I scrounged for something to eat for breakfast, and we all got ready slowly. Juan had to pick up his girlfriend for a Christmas party with her family, and David and I went to my parents' house to spend Christmas with them. It was a quiet day, and we had a really nice dinner together that evening. My brother and Ang came over to visit for a little bit, too. My mom and I also started right in on a couple little crafts. We made crosses out of clothespins and nativity ornaments out of popsicle sticks. A relaxing, enjoyable, quiet Christmas. :) David left later that afternoon to go back to DBU because he had to work the next day.

All dressed up for Christmas

Crafting with Mom

Me and Matt on Christmas

Tuesday, December 26th--My mom turned 77! I let her now we were going to take a nice picture together and do something special with it. So we got up and got ourselves pretty for the picture, I printed it out on her computer, and we made little coasters to always remember celebrating her special day together. Matt and Ang stopped by for a little bit again to wish my mom a happy birthday. My mom and I also watched a Hallmark movie together. Juan came over to hang out with me for a bit, and then when my parents left to go out to eat for my mom's birthday, he and I went to his apartment for a bit and then we met his girlfriend at Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner. I enjoyed a really nice time with both of them and then had really good conversation with Juan when he took me back to my parents' house around 10:00.

More crafts with Mom on her birthday

My sweet boy and his sweet girl

Wednesday, December 27th--My mom had an eye surgery scheduled before she knew I was coming to visit, and it's a surgery she's been waiting on for awhile for the insurance to approve. Since my dad had just had an unexpected eye surgery the week before for a detached retina, he couldn't drive her yet, so I was thankful to be able to help out. I drove them to her surgery and sat talking to my dad while we waited through the surgery. All went well, and we were back at the house by about 4:00. David decided to head back to Wylie to spend time with me, and we went to Juan's house to borrow his air mattress for him to sleep on. When you live so far away, these moments of being able to see both of my sons are incredibly special. David had already told me as soon as I got my ticket to come that he could drive me around to visit friends and go places I haven't been able to go to in awhile. His work schedule allowed him to have all that time free without him even asking, so it was cool how it worked out (even though my friends did offer to pick me up). On the way back from Juan's apartment, we went to Walmart to get a card game to play, then we stopped to see our friends, Mori and Drew, mostly just to try to make a plan to meet up with them sometime over the next few days. David and Drew pretty much grew up together in Mori's home daycare, so that bond between us will always be special. Mori was sick, so we made tentative plans to meet up on Friday. We went back to my parents' house, and David and I played cards together all evening. I loved it.

Thursday, December 28th--I got up early and David drove me to one of my favorite local coffee shops to meet up with my sweet group of church friends that I did Bible study with for many years. A couple friends were unable to join us at the last minute, while three other friends were able to join in at the very last minute. It was so, so good to see all of them again. I love how you can just pick up right where you left off with those kinds of friends. After we sat together for almost three hours just catching up, David and I went to lunch with Martha, who we both have a very strong bond with after all of her help when he had his accident. After lunch, we ran around town a little bit, met up with Juan again to go shopping, and then ended up getting a pizza at SAM'S that David and I took back to my parents' house to eat (and Juan went out to dinner with his girlfriend with one of his gift cards from Christmas). Juan asked if I'd called my friend, Mara, yet (sweet friendship that developed over many years on the soccer fields together), so I texted her right then and made plans to get together for coffee the next morning. Then David and I hung out playing games again.

The best kind of friends, the ones who dig into Scripture with you. They are truly friends for life.

Standing in line for pizza where their dad used to work

Friday, December 29th--We got up, made cinnamon rolls for breakfast, and then headed to Starbucks to meet Mara for coffee. Such a sweet reunion with a friend whose children are almost identical in age to mine. It was a beautiful time catching up with her, while also reminiscing our days together when our children were younger. She was one of my absolute closest friends through Juan's entire adoption process both times (while her husband and Mike co-coached our boys' soccer team), so she will always be close to my heart. While I sat at Starbucks with her, Mori called and said she could meet up with us for a late breakfast/brunch, so we made plans to meet her an hour and a half later at a little diner just up the road.

When Mara and I started getting to the end of our coffees and had caught each other up on life over the last year, we hugged each other goodbye and then went our separate ways. David and I then drove up the road a few miles to sit down for brunch with Mori. We got our table, ordered our food, and then Juan called. We told him where we were and who we were with, and he decided to join us! So a few minutes later, he showed up, too. It was so, so nice to all be together and to catch up. David and her son, Drew, have always been good friends, but Juan has also stayed in close touch with Drew since he's the only one still living in the area, so the bond between our families is still pretty tight. It was one of those lunches that you just didn't want to end. A lunch none of us had a plan for when we got up that morning. I love how God worked that out.

We left there just in time to get back to my parents' house to take my dad to a follow-up doctor's appointment for his recent retina surgery. I had a nice little drive with my dad and then a quick shopping trip at Walmart, while David went to his cousins' house to hang out for the afternoon and evening. My dad and I got back home, I went out for a walk, and then we had dinner with my mom. I think we ended up watching a Hallmark movie or something that evening.

Saturday, December 30th--We got up just a little bit later and left to meet my sweet friend, Amy, at our favorite little coffee shop in downtown Garland, Rosalind. We met her at ten and didn't leave until after 1:00! Amy and I started to bond when our kids dated each other through middle and high school, and though we just joked around about being besties just to bother them, we truly became the best of friends and have stayed close ever since. That one-on-one coffee date was so incredibly refreshing to just open up about anything and everything that's happened in life over the last year and a half. After we left the coffee shop, we tried to connect with Juan again because we needed to meet him somewhere, so David and I ate lunch at one of our favorite places that I don't have in Columbus while we waited for Juan. Then we did a few more things in town and headed back to my parents' house for dinner. David and my dad watched the Cowboys game, while my mom and I watched some Hallmark and then I took a nice, relaxing bath for my last night at their house.

Hanging out at Rosalind

Lunch with David at Cane's

Sunday, December 31st. The last day of 2023. The day started out very quiet and slow-paced with very few plans for running around. I got up, showered, and packed all my stuff. My dad went to church by himself because my mom's doctor said she had to stay home while recovering from her surgery. She watched her church online from her bed while I watched my former church online from the couch (I would have attended with David, but it was online only this weekend.) I texted Juan to see if I would see him and Loren at all, and he said no (for her) because she was busy with her mom. So I said I was just going to go over to my brother's house for a bit in the afternoon. My church service got over early, so I went out for a walk while my dad was gone and while my mom finished her church and then made lunch. While walking, Juan changed my plans and invited me and David to come meet him, Loren, and her mom for lunch (I was really hoping to meet her!). I knew my mom already had lunch plans with us, so I agreed and just assumed I'd get something small to eat with them. I got back from my walk, my dad got home from church, and we all ate lunch together before David and I had to run across town to meet Juan. We went to La Madeline and had coffee and dessert while they had lunch with us. I loved being able to spend a little more time getting to know Loren and also her mom. That really meant a lot to me that that were able to work that out.

After our lunch, David and I went to my brother's house, and then Juan came, too, before he headed out for his own New Year's Eve plans. Around 6:00, we went back to my parents' house to say goodbye and thank them again for their hospitality (and flexibility), then David dropped me off at my friend Amy's house where I would spend NYE and he and a friend went back to my brother's house for their NYE plan. Amy and I enjoyed a delicious taco soup and then literally just sat talking until close to midnight. We decided to go with Columbus time to declare the start to the New Year and we each turned in early.

New Year's Eve with my dad

And my mom, whose eyes are still healing from surgery. We got a good laugh out of that picture. No, nobody punched her in the eye. But she was told to say, "You should see the other guys!" Lol.

Monday, January 1st. Amy and I had coffee together in the morning and just sat and talked some more, and she gave me the most absolute precious gift that touched my heart in a very deep way. Friendship is such a gift, and her friendship is one that I'm so thankful can continue just as strong across the miles.

(This came with a glass water bottle that also says my Bestie with all the same sentiments.)

We left for a day trip to DBU where David was going to meet us before she took us to the airport. First we stopped for lunch at Chick Fil-A where David used to work. Then we got to DBU and walked around the campus taking pictures of the beautiful campus that it is (and walking a mile), and then we met up with David. We hoped to go to the DBU coffeehouse (where her daughter works), but it was closed for New Year's Day. So we went to Boot Barn so I could see where David works, and then we drove to a famous little coffee shop near the airport called La La Land. It was Amy's first time ever at Boot Barn, and it was my first time ever at La La Land. We had a really fun day together, and then she dropped us off at the airport around 5:00.

A peaceful, pretty spot at DBU, the prayer garden.

David and I had Chick Fil-A for dinner at the airport, then we had a smooth flight back to Indiana together. He got to watch a football game with the free wifi, and I watched the movie Love Again, which literally ended right when we landed in Indianapolis. Great timing!

Shortly after, I was giving Mike a hug while David put our luggage in the back, and we headed home. We got home around midnight and went to bed shortly before 1:00. Now we have David here for the next week, which will be fun. So technically the trip isn't over yet! I truly could not have asked for a more heart-warming, heart-filling gift for Christmas this year. Half of my ticket cost was my gift to my parents to be able to spend time with them specifically on Christmas, my mom's birthday, and to be able to help out with my mom's eye surgery. The other half of the ticket cost was Juan's gift to me--which gifted me everything I just wrote about. It was a gift that just kept on giving. David's addition to the gift was his constant presence and availability to take me wherever I needed or wanted to go. (Plus he enjoyed all the coffee and lunches out!), and then our gift to him was to bring him back here to spend time with Mike and the rest of the Alspaugh's for his last Christmas break as a college student. Our next trip down to Texas will be for his upcoming graduation from DBU.

I couldn't have asked for a more heartwarming, memorable Christmas that truly filled my heart to the brim, but it does feel good to be back home, back on this new adventure and new chapter of life. Don't worry, Mike wasn't just on his own while I went to Texas. His mom came to Columbus to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas with him and Matt's family, and then he spent several days in Warsaw with her and the rest of his family. They don't take pictures like I do, though. Haha. They did make some pretty good fudge, though!

My word for 2024--PRESENT

This year's word came to me pretty quickly after I asked God to guide me to it. In fact, I think it's a word He's been hinting at for several months now.

While studying through a Christmas devotional, last year's word, satisfy, stood out to me in one of the day's readings (as my word of the year often does). It reminded me that true satisfaction can only come in God's presence, when I'm fully present in my time with Him and when I don't take for granted that He's fully present with me.

Then I read a writing tip from a writing mentor of mind that simply suggested to be fully present in all the holiday gatherings and conversations with people I don't often see. Rather than showing up with my own agenda, my own questions, or my own stories, I can simply listen and be inspired by what they may want to share. I am totally guilty of having selective hearing, thinking about something else while someone is talking to me, or asking a question and then not truly listening for the answer. This year my goal is to just be present in the moment. Present enough to enjoy it, to appreciate it, to feel it, to truly live it.

I find my brain quite a bit scattered at times. Distracted with things to do. Clinging to or reminiscing a past season that already ended or working hard to connect all the dots to create a future season before its appointed time. And then somehow I missed the present moment, the present circumstance that I'm living, the good works prepared in advance for me to do--right now. The today that I one day prayed about for tomorrow.

I'm a highly sensitive person, which I'm learning means I take in too much information at a time and have a hard time processing it all. Overstimulating environments are a struggle for me, so I need quiet time and space to process events and sort them out in my mind. Precisely why I blog and journal. It also makes sense why a coffee date with a single friend is such a gift to me or why I have pursued training to be a counselor. But even in those safer, quieter environments, I still need to be reminded to be present.

Fully present in the present moment. Not distracted, thinking about the past or the future. But taking in everything I can about the present. In fact, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, the word present is defined as: the period of time that is happening now, not the past or the future.

Present in the presence of my family. My students. My coffee dates with friends. Present in the conversation I'm having with whoever is in front of me rather than thinking about what I'm going to say or what I need to do when we finish talking. Only when I'm fully present can I fully listen and fully learn.

Most importantly, fully present in the presence of Christ. How many times do I wake up in the morning, open my Bible or journal, and then find myself apologizing to God for my distracted mind? Already thinking about all I need to do that day rather than just soaking up those first few minutes of the day with the One who already knows how my day is going to go. It's usually in those moments where I'm fully present that I seem to find clearer answers to my prayers and clearer guidance in a situation.

Reflecting over my word for 2023

Last year was my eleventh year to ask God to give me a single word to focus on during the year. I started in 2013, the year I brought home my second son. Here are the words God gave me for that year and then for ten consecutive years after that:

2013-Trust (While trying to finally complete Juan's adoption successfully.)

2014-Live (Learning to embrace life with a new son)

2015-Give (Wanting to give back or pay it forward for all that had been given to us through Juan's 5 year adoption process)

2016-Joy (Spelled GRATITUDE)

2017-Focus (Pulled back from everything but the essential to give God room to be God)

2018-Cherish (So many precious, priceless memories to hold close to my heart)

2019-Shine (Spending time with Jesus should make his love shine through us)

2020-Release (Let go of expectations and experience God in new ways)

2021-Receive (After releasing my expectations, I was in a better position to receive new blessings)

2022-Peace (Life may get hectic, complicated, and uncomfortable, but Peace is a Person who is always there.)

2023--Satisfy (Click on the link to read last year's post on this word.)

We sang this song in church many times over the last year, and every time it reminded me of the word God gave me for the year. Not only did it remind me that nothing in life can satisfy me except for my relationship with Christ, but it also reminded me to not rush through my time with Him and leave that sacred time and space still unsatisfied.

This year's word will definitely follow me into the new year, and I hope it always stays on the forefront of my mind. As I went through training in Biblical counseling over the last year, I realized that every sin or struggle with strongholds in life always points back to the heart. When my heart isn't passionately pursuing and loving Jesus, my focus will be on myself, and I will never be satisfied. I'll always come up short, always hungering for more. I'll never have enough, and nothing will fulfill me. I don't want to be that person that's like a jar with holes in it that can never fill up, no matter how much is poured in.

I'm learning to be content with where I am even though it's not yet where I want to be, but I will continue to seek my satisfaction in Christ's presence, knowing that He will satisfy my heart--not despite my present circumstances but because of whatever present circumstance He has me in. Which leads me to my next word for 2024.....

30 days of Gratitude

I love the treasures tucked in to the month of November, especially the focus on gratitude that comes with  the Thanksgiving holiday. It's definitely been another unique year in my life, so I can't let the month slip away without listing something I've been thankful for each day this month. We've been making a gratitude chain at school for several weeks in fall and Christmas colors, and now we're ready to hang it up as a decoration in the classroom in preparation for Christmas. Here are a few of the things I put on my chain links, plus more:

A treasured friend

There are friends, and then there are friends who are like family.

Friends who have walked life together with you through several seasons, friends who have seen your ups and downs, who know your kids, your spouse, your hopes and dreams, and even your fears and your disappointments. Friends who you've traveled with, "co-hosted" a young lady from Mexico with, shared your home with, and gone to church with. Friends who have mentored and counseled you without ever saying so.

Friends you can pick up with right where you left off as if no time or distance ever separated you. Friends who lift you up and fill you up in just the right way at just the right time.

I've grown a pretty nice circle of friends all around me here in Indiana over the last year, friends that I am deeply grateful to have in my life and am excited to grow with. But that whole part about being known takes time, and sometimes those are the types of friends that I really miss here in Indiana. Telling your story can only go so far in a new friendship and can never replace the people that lived the story with you.

Several years ago, God called one of my dearest friends (and neighbors) in Texas to move to Hawaii with her husband and the grandchildren they are raising. I had high hopes (still do) of traveling to Maui to see them, but financially that hasn't been a realistic dream for us just yet.

Who knew that a few years later, God would move me to Indiana, about two hours away from where she visits her dad in Kentucky every November. She followed my move, looked up my location, realized the proximity, and reached out to me. Now we started a new tradition to meet up halfway between my house and her dad's house the weekend after Thanksgiving. This last weekend we met up for the second year in a row.

What a treat and a true joy to be in the presence of such a dear friend, someone that really knows me, knows my kids, knows my story (stories). And I know hers', too.  Almost 20 years of friendship built between us have formed a beautiful bond that I'll never take for granted.

Who knew that nearly 20 years after we met on that first mission trip (first of several trips) to Mexico that she'd be making a yearly trip from Hawaii to Kentucky and meeting up for breakfast at Cracker Barrel with me in Scottsburg, Indiana. All I can say is that breakfast filled me up just as much spiritually and emotionally as it did physically. So deeply grateful for such a friend.

2023--A breakfast I wished would never end

And here were were in 2022, accompanied by the boy with two broken arms
(she was and still is our favorite nurse down the road who always took care of us)
